What is Timber Decay?
Timber decay covers a range of biological deterioration in structural and joinery timbers, most commonly wet rot (Coniophora puteana), dry rot (Serpula lacrymans) and wood-boring insects such as the common furniture beetle.
Dry rot in particular can spread through masonry and cause serious structural damage if left untreated. But blanket chemical treatments are often unnecessary — an independent investigation isolates the true extent and moisture cause first.
Common Signs & Symptoms
- Soft, spongy or crumbling timber
- Cuboidal cracking (dry rot)
- White or grey fungal strands (mycelium)
- Fruiting bodies on skirtings or joists
- Small round exit holes (woodworm)
- Springy floorboards or sagging joists
Why a Professional Survey Matters
- Dry rot can spread through masonry and cause structural failure.
- Correct species identification determines the treatment approach.
- Independent surveys prevent unnecessary chemical treatment.
- Moisture source must be resolved for any timber repair to last.
