What is Rising Damp?
Rising damp occurs when ground moisture is drawn upward through the porous masonry of a wall by capillary action, typically due to a failed or missing damp-proof course (DPC). It rarely rises higher than one metre above ground level and leaves a characteristic tide mark of hygroscopic salts.
Many properties diagnosed with 'rising damp' by remedial contractors are actually suffering from penetrating damp, condensation, or plumbing leaks. An independent survey confirms the true cause before costly injection or replastering work is recommended.
Common Signs & Symptoms
- Tide marks up to 1m above skirting
- White salt deposits (efflorescence) on walls
- Damp, flaking or blown plaster at low level
- Peeling wallpaper or bubbling paint
- Rotting skirting boards or floor timbers
- Musty ground-floor odour
Why a Professional Survey Matters
- Rising damp is frequently misdiagnosed by companies selling DPC injection.
- Calibrated deep-wall moisture profiling distinguishes rising damp from other sources.
- An independent report protects you from unnecessary £2,000+ treatment quotes.
- Evidence-based findings are accepted by insurers, lenders and solicitors.
